Underwater Dock Lights: Are They Worth It?
Underwater dock lights look incredible in photos — that glowing blue or green water under a dock at night. But are they actually worth installing, or is it just eye candy? Here's the honest rundown.
What they actually do
Underwater dock lights are LED fixtures mounted below the waterline that light up the water around your dock after dark. The good ones are color-changing (blue, green, white, red, and more) and controlled from your phone. Beyond looking amazing, they do two real things:
They make your dock usable at night. If you like being on the water in the evening — sitting out, having people over, letting the kids swim before bed — lit water completely changes the vibe. Your dock goes from a dark edge you avoid to the best seat in the house.
They attract fish. This is the part people underestimate. Underwater light draws in plankton, plankton draws baitfish, and baitfish draw the bigger fish. Green and white light especially turn your dock into a nightly fish show — and if you fish, into a honey hole. If you've already got a thruster keeping the water moving and oxygenated, the effect stacks.
What they cost to run
Modern LED dock lights sip power — they're not going to move your electric bill in any noticeable way. The real cost is the fixtures and a proper install (mounting below the waterline and wiring them safely near water is not a great DIY project — this is where you want it done right). Once they're in, running them is cheap.
The honest take
Are they "necessary"? No. Muck removal solves a problem; dock lights are an upgrade. But of all the ways to make your waterfront nicer, they're one of the highest wow-for-the-money — relatively affordable, they transform how you use the dock at night, and they genuinely improve the fishing. Most people who put them in wish they'd done it sooner.
The one thing we'd steer you away from: cheap, generic underwater lights and DIY wiring near water. Go with quality fixtures, installed and sealed properly. It's the difference between a light that lasts years and one that floods and dies in a season — plus doing electrical work around water safely.
