Why Muck Builds Up Around Your Orange County Dock (and What Actually Works)
If you've got a dock in Orange County, you know the feeling. You step off the ladder into a foot of black, soupy muck that swallows your foot and lets go with that smell. It coats your ladder posts. It clouds up the second anybody moves. And every year it seems like there's a little more of it.

What muck actually is
Muck isn't dirt. It's mostly dead stuff that's been piling up and rotting in one spot for years.
Leaves, grass clippings, dead algae, fish waste, pollen, little bits of dock foam, whatever blows in and sinks. In a spot where the water doesn't move, all of that settles to the bottom and starts breaking down. That black color and rotten-egg smell? That's the low-oxygen decay happening right under your dock.
Here's the key thing: muck is a stagnation problem. It builds up wherever the water goes still and stays still. And a dock is basically a still-water machine.
Why docks are muck magnets
Think about where your dock sits. Usually it's in a protected corner, a cove, or up against a seawall. That's the whole point of a good dock spot, it's calm and out of the wind.
But calm water is exactly where junk settles. The pilings, the boat lift, the shape of the shoreline, they all break up what little natural flow you had. So your dock area becomes the quietest water on the whole property, and everything that floats in eventually drops out and stays.
I see the same pattern all over Central Florida:
- Canal-front homes where the water dead-ends and has nowhere to flush.
- Cove and finger-lot docks tucked back out of the wind.
- Retention and community ponds that barely move at all.
- Older seawalls where muck stacks up right along the base.
Orange County has a lot of all of these. The lakes and canals around Orlando, Winter Garden, Ocoee, and out toward the east side collect a ton of leaf litter and grass runoff, and a lot of these waterbodies don't have much natural current to begin with.
What doesn't work (or doesn't last)
Before I tell you what works, let me save you some money and frustration.
Raking and shoveling. You can do it. It's brutal work, it stirs up a mess, and the muck comes right back because the cause is still there. It's a bandage, not a fix.
Dumping in "muck pellets" and additives. Some folks swear by them. In my honest experience they don't do much on their own if the water's still sitting there dead. No product fixes a flow problem.
Ignoring it. It only compounds. More muck means less oxygen, which means more muck. It snowballs.
What actually works: keep the water moving
